Q: Can I walk on the refinished floor?

A:  Because of the curing time of various finishes, you will want to wait 6-8 hours for initial drying time. When dry to the touch, you may walk lightly with stocking feet on the surface. Full curing takes 10 days, and it is recommended that heavy traffic be avoided for at least 48 hours or longer.

Q: Do I have a choice about how glossy I want my floors?

A:  In general there are four levels of "shine" available for refinishing:
High gloss, Gloss, Semi-gloss, Satin (low gloss). Typically gloss and semi-gloss are the most popular sheens. The customer chooses which finish they prefer.

Q: Do you help move furniture?

A:  Furniture and carpet removal services are available upon request.

Q: How difficult is it to stain floors?

A:  Staining requires an additional 1-2 days depending on the stain, type of job, and nature of stain used. Dark colors show more wear than light or natural color, so this should be considered in the decision. Matching an old stain is unlikely as UV rays as well as traffic patterns will effect the original stain over time. Bill’s Floor Sanding is very experienced in custom staining and will always consult with the customer regarding the job.

Q: How do you fix a pet stain?

A:  Each situation is different, depending on the amount of damage done. Are the stains new or old? How deep is the stain into the wood? Has there been discoloration in the wood? Bill’s Floor Sanding will consult with the customer on an individual basis.

Q: How long does a typical floor refinishing take?

A:  Of course the answer depends on the area to be processed. Most jobs take from 3-5 days from start to finish, depending on drying conditions. Staining may add 1-2 days.

Q: How much will it cost?

A:  Every job is unique and may require a combination of one or more services, depending on the condition of the wood and surface. Our expertise spans Four Generations. The value our customers receive from our craftsmanship is extraordinary. We are competitively priced with top quality results. We are fully insured and licensed.

Q: Is it dirty?

A:  Bill’s Floor Sanding has invested in the top of the line dustless containment system - The Atomic DCS by Bona. This system eliminates dust in the home as it is collected outside the residence. (please see further detail in the section Dustless System) Airborne particles are collected via cyclonic technology to protect and promote environmental safety.

Q: What about existing flooring under carpets?

A:  In general, flooring under carpeting can be refinished. However there may be certain situations that may affect the ability to produce a desired result. This may include the type and condition of the wood. Bill’s Floor Sanding will consult with the customer about their specific situation.

Q: What can I do to give my floors a new look?

A:  You might consider installing accent strips or a custom inlay as a focal point. The simple addition of wood vents can change the look from ordinary to sophisticated. Or perhaps a border in a contrasting wood or color in your favorite room, or trim around a fireplace. Bill’s Floor Sanding can do it all!

Q: What do I need to consider before having my floors refinished?

A:  The size of job and locations of areas which need refinished. Are there hallways which should be included? How are old areas going to blend with newly refinished areas? Do you have an adequate amount of time for the job to be done properly? Will you be in the home or away? How will you protect furniture and belongings? Do you need to move furniture?

Q: What kind of installations are available?

A:  Bill’s Floor Sanding installs any type of flooring, including nail down, glued, stapled, or floating floors. We have assisted homeowners in installing flooring in additions or complex situations over concrete pads and additions. Matching existing flooring is very difficult but Bill’s Floor Sanding has expertise to give you the best job possible.

Q: What kind of repairs do you do?

A:  Bill’s Floor Sanding is accomplished in every kind and type of repair. This includes staircases, thresholds, radiator areas and water damage areas. We also offer consulting regarding whether an area can be repaired and closely matched to existing flooring, without replacing an entire floor.

Q: Will I need to move out during the sanding and refinishing process?

A:  Access is allowed anytime the floors are not wet. Great care needs to be taken to keep the areas clean and dry. The customer will generally have access from 8pm-8am. We will work with you to accommodate any special needs.

Q: Will the finish smell too much?

A:  Finishes are now manufactured to specific required VOC (volatile organic content) standards according to environmental regulations. There are many choices of finishes and we will consult with the owner to choose the best finish for your needs. Water based finishes in particular tend to have the least odor, and there are also non-toxic natural finishes available.
